An accounting degree opens doors to a wide range of careers, and getting a degree in accounting doesn’t mean you have to become an accountant. Public accounting jobs are the most commonly acquired jobs for recent graduates, but there are also plenty of government and private sector jobs that can help you change the world. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that jobs for accountants and auditors will experience 18 percent growth from 2006 to 2016. This is faster than the average for most other occupations.

1. Keep the Books for a Charity Organization

If you want to stay in accounting and make a difference for a cause you believe in, consider applying for work at a non-profit. Helping to keep the books of a non-profit organization solvent can make a real difference in the lives of the people who rely upon the organization for help.  You’ll be using your skills in all areas to help support an organization you truly care about.

2.  Work for the Government

There are many various government sector jobs that hire people who have a degree in accounting to conduct work unrelated to finances. For example, the FBI often has to apply accounting methods and techniques to track down and arrest people who commit financial crimes. An accounting degree shows an ability to follow procedure and perform detail-oriented work. As such, government agencies often hire people with a Stetson University masters of accounting degree to work in Federal law enforcement agencies.

3. Start Your Own Business

Many business owners fail simply because they don’t understand the basics of financing. As someone with an accounting degree, you can sell a product or service with an understanding of how your services affect your bottom line.
